Spotlight on

KatJam, dedicated author of The Sketch Factor.
Kat is an office monkey, who loves singing out

Where were you born? Slightly east of Cleveland, Ohio

What did you want to be when you grew up?
Let's see: a nun (did I mention I had 12 years of Catholic
School), a rock star (talk about a 180 degree change), a writer

What do you do now?
I work for a large corporation in a marketing department.
My job entails designing brochures, the company newsletter, laughing at my boss' jokes, and tolerating some very strange coworkers.       

Tell us a little about your husband,
and why he's slacking on his blog.
Slacking is just what he does. He does it well.
Let's see... he delivers newspapers at the crack o' dawn
every morning, then 5 days a week he is the Fed Ex guy
(yes, he gets to wear the shorts) and also has a band that
plays out sporadically. He is an aficionado of beer, as well.
And he likes chicken wings. A lot.

What were mealtimes like for you as a child?
Uneventful. Usually at the kitchen table with the TV on
in the background, often the local news. My mom wasn't
a spectacular cook, but there wasn't one thing she made
that I didn't like. She never made me eat lima beans, or
Brussels sprouts, or liver or anything nasty like that.

I know that you are a vending machine junkie.
What is your favorite item to find there?

If I'm paying a visit to the vending machine I am either
in search of chocolate (like a 3 Musketeers or Twix)
or for a snack ending in the letter O (Frito, Dorito,
Cheeto, Muncho) so if I can find one of those, it's a jackpot.
Usually though the machine isn't fully stocked
so I have to settle for Cheez-Its or a Mr. Goodbar
or some second rate snack of that sort.

Did you ever like any of your school photos?
I had a couple good ones. My senior pic wasn't too shabby.
But the most infamous was my 4th grade mullet pic.
I should find that and post it.

What other crimes of style did you commit?

Around the same time period, I owned a pink sweat suit,
the pants were stirrup pants, and the sweatshirt depicted
white cats in a pussy willow tree. That was my favorite
outfit until the elastic in one of the stirrups gave out.
Maybe I have a pic somewhere of me in this outfit, with the mullet.

What was your first date like?
Scandalous. I was in 7th grade, Chris* was in eighth. We went to see the movie Pet Sematary. I'm pretty sure he did the whole "pretend to yawn and put the arm around the girl" move on me. And there was some making out, for sure. I had to go with two other friends, who sat away from us, in order to bepermitted to go, and he met us there, so my parents had no ideaI had been on an ACTUAL DATE. (*his real name)

What is in your vegetable bin?
Let's see: two bags of baby spinach (buy one get one free!),half a tomato, half a red onion, a container of mushrooms.
 
Do you plan on actually making something with the spinach?
Of course! We use spinach with every meal.
We put it in spaghetti sauce, use it instead of lettuce on tacos (taco night = every Monday), on our cereal in the morning... everywhere.

What color is your car?
It's somewhat taupeish/tan. On the Pantone scale it's 4675, approximately (that will mean nothing unless you are a color geek like I am)

Are you having a good hair day?
Meh. I didn't have time to do anything with it this morning.
Not that I ever do anything to it. Low-maintenance
is the key to my (lack of) hairstyle.

Don't you think that your cat, Dom, could use
a good pet psychologist?

Both my cats, actually. I'd really like the Pet Psychic
to spend some time with them both and tell me what the
story is.
 
What is your favorite cologne? I assume you mean for
a man? Hmm. I don't really have one, although in high
school I did enjoy the Drakkar on a guy. Now I think it's
cheesy. Even though you didnít ask, I like Clinique
Happy perfume, and that is what I usually wear.

What is your middle name? Andrea. Named for my
two aunts, Kathleen and Andrea.

What type of books do you like to read?
Anything that looks good to me in Borders while I'm
browsing around in there. I like a lot of the Oprah
selections, but really, I'll read just about anything that
strikes my fancy as long as it's well written.
(Readers should note that Kat reads my blog.)

Are you looking more forward to Big Brother 5
or The Amazing Race this season?
BB5 for sure. I don't know if I can stomach Alison
'n' Donny on TAR. Hopefully they will be eliminated early.
And then tortured.
 
What is your favorite type of cookie?
Good old chocolate chip.

AOL or SOL?

I attended a party this afternoon,
and while talking with my friend,
Gretchen,
she asked if I used AOL. 
Once confirmed,
she told me that
she saw a cicada-related
story on
AOL's WelcomeScreen with my
screenname on it a few weeks ago!


Yes, apparently AOL decided to feature
my online journal
without even telling me. 
Other AOLers
will tell you that to be on
the welcome screen is Big News;
it is viewed by millions
of people every day.

Well, okay... it would be big news if I'd
actually KNOWN ABOUT IT.
And if, say, they weren't pimping my 
DISCONTINUED
journal.


To AOL I say~
You are a real piece of work.
But not in a good way.
Ya dig?

Campfire Fare

These trail-happy recipes are for Gforce.
I have a couple more camp-friendly
recipes that I'll post in a couple of weeks.


Veggie Potjie
This recipe is great because these
vegetables transport and keep easily.


  • 5-6 medium potatoes
  • 1 medium butternut squash
  • 5 large carrots
  • 2 ears of corn
  • 1 small turnip or rutabaga
  • 1 stalk celery
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 2-3 onions
  • 4-6 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • black pepper to taste
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 cup vegetable stock


Wash the vegetables and cut into bite-sized pieces.
You can use any other hard winter vegetables that you like.
Heat the potjie, (a cast iron pot, size 3), over coals until a
slightly warm, then add oil. When oil is hot, lightly cook
onions and garlic. Arrange vegetables in layers on top of
onion and garlic mixture. The ones with the longest cooking
times go on the bottom of the pot. Sprinkle on the seasonings
and herbs. Pour stock over the final layer. Cover the pot with
its lid and simmer over campfire coals for 1-1/2 to 2 hours.
Leave the lid on until the cooking time is finished.






This is a Girl Scout recipe. 
It is awesome!

Gingerbread Oranges
1 orange per person~ navel works good.
1 Gingerbread Mix ~ The just add water type.
Slice the top off an orange about 1/4 of the way
down and eat the pulp. Prepare the gingerbread mix
according to the package and spoon into each orange
shell. Each orange should be about 2/3  full. Place the
top of the orange back on the shell. Wrap in foil
and place in the coals of a fire for about 15 minutes.
