Spotlight On...

Kyara Tay.  Ky is one of my favorite people to chat with.  She's sweet and funny, and knows how to bribe her friends with food.  You've gotta admire that.

Name: Lori

Age: 38 on my birth certificate, but I swear, time is relative. Based on my hobbies, I should be about 17.

Location: Springfield, Illinois.. conservative, scary, Republican hell with lots of corn and soybeans.

Where were you born? La Mesa, California, but I've lived all over the US.

Where did you enjoy living the most? Iíd have to say either New York or New Orleans. We lived out on Long Island which was great because the city was so close. To this day, I miss New York pizza. Nothing else like it anywhere! New Orleans was fun, but it ruined me. I was at least 12 before I realized that not every parade threw candy, beads, and doubloons at you. How disappointing!

What did you want to be when you grew up? A veterinarian or Queen of the Free World. I was always looking out for the underdog. Funny, I think I still am.

And now? Are you living your dream? Professionally or personally? I used to think they were one in the same, but Iíve changed my mind about that. Iíd still love to be a vet, but itís just not going to happen. I think medical research has made me moreÖ attunedÖ to humans which is something Iíd kind of avoided. Working with the HIV virus in the lab is one thing, but seeing the toll it takes on patients and getting to know those patients on a personal basis has changed me as a person. I think, for the better. As for my personal dreams, I think I never knew what I was missing. Iíd never planned on getting married or having children, but meeting my husband really changed me at my core. I value different things now. I am, however, still working on that whole Queen of the Free World thing.

What were mealtimes like for you as a child? A bit terrifying, actually. My father was a harsh man, but my mother made perfectly balanced homemade meals every night. I had to do all the dishes every night and despised it. To this day, I'd rather clean out a toilet with a toothbrush than do the dishes.

You seem to enjoy cooking, though. Do you have any specialties? I can get friends to do anything in exchange for my lasagna. Itís served me well every time I needed to move. Even if stairs were involved.

Did you ever like any of your school photos? Does anyone? I mean, seriously... what's with that? Is it a conspiracy or something? Ok, truthfully, I liked my kindergarten picture. I was astoundingly cute back then even without front teeth!

What was your first date like? I can't even remember a "first date". I do, however, remember my first kiss. It was the summer before my freshman year in high school and I was in my uncle's driveway. There was a cute boy that lived across the street from my uncle named Ted. He was in a band. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. That feeling? Lasted about a week. Heh.

Tell us about your (younger!) husband and how you met. Oh boy. This is the part of the interview where you all figure out what a huge nerd I am. Ah well, you were all bound to find out sooner or later. Back in 1999, I started playing a computer game known as a massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG). It was called Everquest (or Evercrack as itís sometimes known). Highly addictive fun for type A personalities! Every character you encounter in the game is another person typing on a keyboard in real life. I met my husband inside the game where he wooed me with virtual flowers, big swords, and shiny armor. Eventually, I gave him my phone number and we spent about four months making sure everyone at AT&T got a steady paycheck. We met in person for the first time in December of Ď99 and by February of 2000, he moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania. We were married about a month after 9/11 and just celebrated our 3 year wedding anniversary.

You know all those annoying people that tell you, "When you meet the right person, you just know!!" Yeah. Iím one of those people now. I knew he was the one from the minute I saw him in the St. Louis airport. He is, by far, the very best thing that ever happened to me. Heís incredibly kind and generous, very intelligent and perceptive, and he makes me think there just might be a tiny bit of good left in the world. He makes me want to be a better person. And yes, heís 14 years my junior. So when Iím 80, heíll only be 66! Heh.

People ask if weíre still playing Everquest. Frighteningly enough, Everquest 2 comes out on Tuesday, Nov. 9th and weíve already pre-ordered the game. Nerds for life, baybee!

What is in your vegetable bin? Pre-sliced baby carrots (Hi! I'm lazy!), some peppers and tomatoes from my garden, some pre-washed fresh spinach and some sliced portabella mushrooms.

What color is your car? Purple! My favorite color. Although, we just bought a new Mazda 3 Zoom! Zoom! and it's a lovely titanium grey color.

Are you having a good hair day? Well, no. I'm hating my hair these days. Hate. Lots of hate.

What do you do for exercise? Right now, I cough. A lot. Pneumonia sucks. Usually, I do a lot of walking either on a treadmill while watching TV or on my breaks at work. We have a whole group of people that walk together at work. Weíre even doing a 3K walk fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation in November. Thatís assuming I can breathe and stuff by then.

What is your favorite perfume? I'm a little weird about scents. I like to coordinate them with the seasons, even in my house. Yeah. I know. Discuss. I'll just wait over here. Anyway, for summer and spring I like to have light, flowery scents like freesia or lilac. In the fall and winter I like something a little more spicy and currently the choice is Hugo Deep Red. I'm pretty picky so I don't often find anything I like.

What is your middle name? Ann. Does it get any more boring that that? Not even an "E" on the end!

What type of books do you like to read? You name it, I read it. I think Buffy and I share a passion for Stephen King and Anne Rice. I love sci fi and fantasy books so I know way too much about Harry Potter even though I have no children. In fact, I'm considering having children just so I can read all their books without shame! As a child, my mother used to lock me out of the house during the summer because I wouldn't go outside at all. I'd stand there at the door whining and crying because all I wanted to do was come back inside and read. I literally read my way through an entire library one summer.

What are your favorite TV shows? I love me some TV. Right now, Iím completely and utterly absorbed with Lost. One might even say obsessed. Hobbits and monsters and miracles, oh my! I like a lot of "reality" TV too. Iím a big fan of The Amazing Race which is, by far, the best of the reality bunch. I like Survivor, Gilmore Girls, all the Law & Orders, (except for CIÖ that Vincent DíOnofrio is cree.pee.) ER, and Third Watch. Iím also a big fan of The Screen Savers on G4TechTV. Itís a big computer nerd show. Love it! But, the crowning jewel of my summers will always be Big Brother. Part of it is the show, part of it is the live feeds, but a lot of it is the fun we have in chat and on the boards at Hamster Time. What a bunch of witty, cool people!

What is your favorite type of cookie? I'll eat any cookie as long as it doesn't have nuts in it. Oh who am I kidding, I'll still eat it even with nuts. Lemon cookies, chocolate chip cookies, ginger snaps, snickerdoodles, peanut butter cookies.. YUM! If it contains sugar, I love it.

What is the best ending you've ever seen in a movie? This is a tough question because I love movies. I like the ending of Billy Elliot because itís a good illustration of how important it is to be true to yourself. On the other hand, I hate the ending of Castaway because, dudeÖ OPEN THE FRIGGIN BOX ALREADY!!

I guess Iíd have to say the best is the ending of Itís a Wonderful Life. I cry every single time.

Thank you, Kyara!  I giggled all the way through this interview!  I hope you feel better soon!

It's a quiz, people, not an insult!
